Smoothie bowl vs. Smoothie:
A smoothie bowl is basically frozen fruit and/or veggies blended with other healthy ingredients to form the thickness and consistency of ice cream. The denseness of a smoothie bowl can hold up to adding more toppings. A smoothie, on the other hand, is thinner and usually sipped with a straw. If you prefer to eat your calories rather than drink them…this might just be for you. Plus, you can top them with whatever you choose and of course…they’re soooo pretty.
This smoothie bowl recipe is fun and colorful due to the addition of Blue Spirulina powder. Blue Spirulina is a pigment derived from blue-green algae. It is rich in protein, vitamins, minerals, carotenoids, and antioxidants that can help protect cells from damage. Also, it has an abundance of B vitamins which enhances energy levels, boosts the immune system, increases metabolism, and improves digestion! It’s considered a superfood because of all the dense nutritional value in it and it’s perfect for the busy equestrian lifestyle.
Blue Spirulina has a somewhat bitter taste, however it’s nearly undetectable when blended with fruit and other ingredients.
***Fun fact: NASA has used Spirulina as a dietary supplement for astronauts
